What IP65 Really Means for Industrial Panel PCs — and Where Protection Stops

Ask for a "waterproof" touch screen and you will get a datasheet with an IP rating on it. Ask what that rating actually covers and the answer is narrower than most buyers expect. An IP code describes the result of two defined laboratory tests — nothing more. Knowing exactly what those tests are is the difference between a panel PC that survives its first wash-down and one that is replaced within a year.

Reading the Code

IP stands for Ingress Protection, defined in IEC 60529. The two digits after it are independent ratings.

The first digit covers solids, on a scale of 0 to 6. A 5 means dust-protected: some dust may enter, but not enough to interfere with operation. A 6 means dust-tight — no ingress at all.

The second digit covers water, on a scale of 0 to 9K. The steps that matter in industry are:

  • 4 — splashing water from any direction
  • 5 — a 6.3 mm water jet from any direction
  • 6 — a powerful 12.5 mm jet
  • 7 — temporary immersion in one metre of water
  • 9K — close-range, high-pressure, high-temperature jets

So IP65 means dust-tight plus resistance to low-pressure jets from any angle. That is a genuinely useful level of protection for a production floor, a workshop, or an outdoor kiosk under a canopy. It is not a promise that the unit can be immersed, and it is not a promise that it will survive a pressure washer.

The Front Panel Is Not the Whole Enclosure

This is the single most misread line on any panel PC specification, and it is worth stating plainly: most industrial panel PCs are rated IP65 at the front panel only.

Our own range is typical. Models such as the ITPC-A113, ITPC-A500 and ITPC-A600 are built with a die-cast aluminium front bezel and a full-flat fascia, and they carry an IP65 front-panel rating. The ITPC-B150 and ITPC-B170 are the same story in 15" and 17" 4:3 formats.

The rating applies to the face because the face is what gets exposed. The assumption behind the design is that the unit is panel-mounted into a cabinet or machine housing, with the rear of the chassis and all of its I/O inside the enclosure. Mount one of these on an open wall in a wash-down area with the connectors exposed, and the IP65 figure on the datasheet tells you nothing useful about the ports at the back.

If the back of the unit will be exposed, you need either a rated enclosure around it or a fully sealed IP65/IP66 all-round design, which is a different and more expensive class of product.

Where IP69K Comes In

IP69K originates in the German DIN 40050-9 standard and is now part of IEC 60529. The test is specific: water at 80 °C, delivered at 80–100 bar, from 10–15 cm away, at four angles, while the unit rotates on a turntable.

That is a food-production and pharmaceutical requirement. It exists because those plants clean with hot, high-pressure chemical wash-downs, every shift. If that is your environment, you need a stainless-steel, fully sealed terminal designed for it — an aluminium IP65 front bezel will not do, and no amount of gasket tape will make it do.

It is also worth knowing that IP69K does not automatically include IP67. The tests are separate. A unit rated for high-pressure jets has not necessarily been tested for immersion, so if you need both, both have to be stated.

Connectors, Cable Glands and the Weakest Link

An enclosure is only as sealed as its openings. In practice, ingress failures are rarely the fault of the chassis:

  • Unused ports left open. Every unpopulated connector is a hole. Blanking caps are cheap and are routinely forgotten.
  • Standard connectors in a sealed wall. A regular RJ45 or USB-A socket is not rated. Crossing a sealed boundary needs M12 or a rated bulkhead connector.
  • Cable entries. Glands must match the cable diameter. An oversized gland on a thin cable seals nothing.
  • Gasket compression. Panel-mount clamps need to be tightened evenly and to spec. Over-tightening one corner deforms the gasket and opens the opposite one.

Dust, Heat and the MENA Case

Across much of the Middle East and North Africa, the realistic threat is not water at all. It is fine airborne dust, and it is relentless.

Dust is what makes the first digit matter more than the second in this region. A 6 rating on a fanless, sealed-chassis design means the internals stay clean — there is no fan drawing grit across a heatsink, and no filter to replace on a maintenance schedule nobody keeps. It is the same argument for fanless construction generally, just arriving from the environmental side rather than the reliability side.

The trade-off is thermal. A sealed enclosure sheds heat only through its surface, so the ambient temperature around the unit — inside a cabinet, in direct sun, next to a machine — is what sets the real limit. That deserves its own discussion, and it gets one in a later article.

A Practical Checklist

Before you sign off a panel PC specification, confirm:

  1. Does the rating apply to the front panel, or to the whole enclosure?
  2. Where is the unit physically mounted, and what is exposed?
  3. What is the actual cleaning regime — a wipe-down, a hose, or a hot pressure wash?
  4. Are all unused ports capped, and do all cable entries have correctly sized glands?
  5. Is the first digit high enough for the dust you actually have?

Get those five right and the IP code on the datasheet starts meaning something.
